Bee Series

In mid-2020 I went on a beach vacation with my family. While I was playing with my daughter, a bee showed up right next to me. I’m scared of bees and my first instinct was to run away. But as I watched the bee, I saw she was just hanging out in the air, watching the waves, like the rest of the beach goers. The encounter was so unexpected that is left a strong impression on me. I tried to google “why would bees be at the beach” and got some theories around the phenomena but no definitive explanation since it’s not their natural habitat.

When something is out of place, it catches our attention. We want to know more and understand the circumstances behind what we are seeing. I think it’s because our mind is programed to bring meaning and order to our every day chaos, so we could have a sense of control over our lives. We feel uncomfortable with mysteries. We need to label them clearly and put them away in the right box.

My 15 seconds of human-bee interaction resulted in three drawings, all dedicated to that one unique bee. These drawings were my way of processing what happened and celebrating the unexpected, the unknown and the mysterious.
